BANGALORE, April 18: Dazzling fireworks that lit up the sky and a glittering opening ceremony attended by the top brass of the ICC and the BCCI kicked off the DLF Indian Premier League (IPL) here this evening.

Watch: IPL extravaganza begins

In a spectacular ceremony before the lung-opener between Bangalore Royal Challengers and the Kolkata Knight Riders, the BCCI patted itself for heralding the start of a new phase in international cricket.

A packed house erupted in excitement as captains of the eight participating teams walked out to sign the MCC's Spirit of Cricket, under which the entire tournament will be played out.

BCCI President described it as a "historic day" for international cricket and hoped that fans would maintain their interest for the next 44 days, which will see 59 matches.

"I am confident that all cricket-loving people will support this new initiative that the BCCI has taken," he said.

ICC President Ray Mali also congratulated the Indian board for the spectacular arrangement.

"You have taken cricket to the next level," he said. Later, BCCI vice-President and IPL chairman Lalit Modi declared the tournament open.

The Kings XI Punjab, meanwhile, has won two of the four matches it has played so far and looks strong with Kumar Sangakkara, Yuvraj Singh, Simon Katich and James Hopes doing well with the bat.

Irfan Pathan is the highest wicket taker for the team but Brett Lee's departure will add to the pressure on Pathan and new-ball bowler S Sreesanth.

The pitch at the Rajiv Gandhi stadium is ideal for batting and the team chasing a target is expected to have an edge. (PTI Photo)

Deccan Chargers v Delhi Daredevils, IPL, Hyderabad

Big guns fail again as Deccan score 142

A flat deck in Hyderabad would have come as a relief for the Deccan Chargers batsmen, fresh from encountering an Eden Gardens minefield, but the Delhi Daredevils bowling attack ensured once again Deccan's big overseas signings were unable to fire, this time in front of a home crowd. A late charge by Rohit Sharma helped his team recover to 142 for 8, a below-par score given the conditions.

Rohit Sharma's dazzling 66, including 26 in a Farveez Maharoof over, rescued Deccan after the Delhi bowlers had kept the likes of Adam Gilchrist, Andrew Symonds and Shahid Afridi quiet. VVS Laxman, the Deccan captain, has no hesitation in batting first but his team were soon reeling at 60 for 5.

Glenn McGrath started in typical miserly fashion, with a maiden, but it was Mohammad Asif who did the early damage. Adam Gilchrist played-on after having smashed Asif over the square-leg boundary, and two overs later Laxman only managed a faint inside-edge to a ball that nipped back in, going on to disturb the woodwork.

At the other end, Venugopal Rao was all at sea against McGrath, managing only two runs off his first eight deliveries against the Australian, before breaking the shackles with a four over long-off. He had a lucky stay at the crease, with mistimed pulls and heaves, till Farveez Maharoof ended his misery, inducing Rao to hit one straight down the throat of Shikhar Dhawan on the cover boundary.

McGrath bowled through his four, but Andrew Symonds' two consecutive fours - pulling one to midwicket and stepping out to make room for one over midwicket - did spoil his figures. Symonds had top scored for his side in the Kolkata nightmare, but Maharoof prevented a repeat, getting Symonds to edge one to wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik. Rohit got going with a first-ball four off Yo Mahesh, and took his chances from the start, hitting consecutive boundaries off Maharoof. A brief lull followed after Shahid Afridi fell leg-before to Rajat Bhatia, but Rohit got the momentum going with a six off Bhatia, before going berserk in the 18th over bowled by Maharoof.

The over fetched 6,6,4,4,4,2, ensuring Deccan reached a respectable score, with Rohit reaching his fifty off just 31 balls. He fell for 66 off 36, but the 52 runs from the final three overs might prove crucial if Chaminda Vaas and RP Singh can repeat the work done by McGrath and Asif.
