THE CONCERNED CITIZENS OF DANfELSTOWN The idea of forming an organization to help the village of Danielstown was the idea of Wemyss Grosvenor-Hinds, Aubrey Noel and Albert Verwayne. They had been toying \vith the idea for a long time and finally on July 23, 2000 they called a meeting to discuss their vision. The meeting was held at the residence of Albert Verwayne and was attended by Livingston Paul, Cecil (Buddy) Williams, Egbert Grosvenor, Wemyss Grosvenor-Hinds, Brentnol John, Philip George, Aubrey Noel and Fitzpatrick Ncdd. Plans were discussed to toml an organization that would lend some assistance to the community of Danielstown; and Brentnol John suggested that we include that region encompassing La Belle Alliance to Windsor Castle, since children from those areas attended school at Daniclstown and now attend school at Sparta. The name Concerned Citizens of Daniels town was given because oftllis idea, also, because aU of the participants at the meeting except Philip George were from !)anielstoWll. Everyone applauded Brentnol's idea and there and then plans were developed to lorn) the organization. Elections were held on that same day and the following persons were elected to office. Fitzpatrick Nedd as president,Wemyss Grosvenor-Hinds as secretary, Brcntnol John as treasurer and Aubrey Noel as assistant secretary-treasurer. it was agreed that meetings would be held monthly alternating between members' homes and that there must be a branch of tile organization at home. Attempts were made to get in touch with someone who would be willing 10 take on the responsibility within the La Belle Alliance IWindsor Castle area. That person was to take on the task ofJaunching the local chapter ofthe organization. At our August 2006 meeting, Mr. Egbert Grosvenor announced that he would be going to Guyana and that he would be visiting the Essequibo Coast. The president, Fitzpatrick Nedd suggested that Mr. GrOSvenor contact Ms. Daphne Beete, convey our vision and ask her to form a h(ldy ofthe Concerned Citizens of Danielstown which would be known as the local chapter. This was done and the Concerned Citizens of Danielstown was on it:; way. The two groups immediately began laying out plans and decided that in the year 2002 there would be the first home coming. Our first project \vas to repair the Danielstown Community Center which wa." in des-repair. The group took on this project and with help trom the government of Guyana was able to renovate the building in time for the 2002 homecoming. Since then the group has taken on several other projects. There was no btidge across the canal that funs between the sea wall and the village of Danielstown at the southern end ofthe village. "(1)e group funded the construction of a bridge that is now being used by the entire community to cross over to the sea wall. The bridge was dedicated during the 2004 homecoming. A bus shed \vas constructed in Danielstown and that was dedicated during the 2006 homecoming. For the 2008 home coming the group will be dedicating a bus shed at the Windsor Castle Hcalth Center. The government had built a computer lab within the Sparta Primary School and ten years had passed but no computers were ever brought to the school. During the 2006 home coming the head master contacted the president ofthc New York Chapter and asked if the group would be willing to donate computers to the school. The president said to him, "consider it done," and two computers and printers were donated to the school and presented in January of2007. The group also donates writing materials to the schools and in 2004 made a donation of text books to the primary and kindergarten schools at Danielstown.
The community center at Danielstown now houses a library that was donated by tbe group and members of the community from La Belle Alliance to Windsor Castle can borrow books. The library houses encyclopedias, National Geographic magazines as well as novels and other rcading materials.
At the 2004 homecoming the group presented the Muslim Mosque at Lima with copies of the Koran and the Hindu Temples at Sparta and Lima with copies of the Cecta. At each home coming the group presents the mosque and the temples with incense. Twice each year the group sends barrels with clothing to be distributed hJ the La Belle Alliance/Windsor Castle area. At this year's home coming the old 81. Agnes church will be rededicated. The group prompted by residents originating from Danielstown who now reside in the United States and Canada funded the renovation ofthe building. Many of the people from the area wanted the building preserved as a land mark. At each home coming the group has fceding in all of the villages from La Belle Alliance to Windsor Castle. The group holds three fundraising events in the New York area annually. 1. On the last Saturday in April there is a bus ride to Atlantic City. 2. On the last Saturday in July there is the annual bar b cue. 3. On the first Saturday in December is the annual dance. Every two years the group gnes to the Danielstown area for home coming. This year's homecoming will be held from August 10th through August 16th 2008.
